Growing up in Chicagoland we had Italian markets all over the place. You could walk around the block and grab a cold cut Italian sandwich, Italian beef, Chicago Dog, Maxwell Street Polish.... One thing that unites sandwich lovers in Chicago is pickled vegetables to top our subs. Flaky French rolls filled with Italian cold cuts, lettuce, tomato, thin sliced onion, and topped with Giardiniera, Hot Pepper Spread (aka Minced Giardiniera), Sport Peppers, Sweet Relish, Muffuletta... some bright pickled vegetables to bring our sandwich to new levels. Though there are many suggested uses for these condiments, there really isn't a wrong way to eat them.
So hit up the lunch meat drawer, grab that warm French bread from Jewel, and let's make some sandwiches!
